Jesswar.Design | A Seraphim

Here's one of the illustrations I created for my website. Thought it deserved a moment on center stage. This creature is an interpretation of a seraphim, a mythological creature from the Old Testament. I first encountered the concept of a seraphim not from the Bible (surprise! a pastor's kid doesn't know her OT mythology), but from one of my favorite book series, A Wrinkle in Time.

The Wrinkle in Time series was/is such a mind-melting and beautiful story. I would call it a Young Adult Sci-Fi, but packed with so much meaning. When I first read the series it felt important and expansive. It changed how I felt and thought about life in a way. Helped me understand that though the universe is so much larger than myself, my thoughts and choices still had consequence and meaning. That a thing can be both big and small at the same time. Pure magic.

Here's a little quote from A Wind in the Door, the second book in the series:

“There are still stars which move in ordered and beautiful rhythm. There are still people in this world who keep promises. Even little ones, like your cooking stew over your Bunsen burner. You may be in the middle of an experiment, but you still remember to feed your family. That’s enough to keep my heart optimistic, no matter how pessimistic my mind. And you and I have good enough minds to know how very limited and finite they really are. The naked intellect is an extraordinarily inaccurate instrument.”
